LHS-FSHS basketball on tap

It will be presents and eggnog for two teams and the dreadful lump of coal for two others.

Tonight at Free State High, the Free State boys and girls basketball teams will play host to Lawrence High in the final games of 2009 for both teams.

The latest version of the city showdown will be a mixed bag of sorts, a new experience for several athletes and old hat for others.

Players such as Free State’s Chantay Caron, Ashli Hill, Wren Wiebe and Nick Hassig and Lawrence High’s Haley Parker, Cassie Potter and Jasmyn Turner, will be playing in their sixth or seventh city hoops showdown, while newcomers like Free State’s Lynn Robinson, Brett Frantz and Josh May, as well as Lawrence’s K.J. Pritchard, Anthony Buffalomeat and Logan Henrichs will be experiencing the madness for the first time.

In addition, first-year LHS coaches Mike Lewis (boys) and Nick Wood (girls) also will be getting a taste of life on the city’s biggest high school basketball stage.

The LHS boys (0-5) and LHS girls (1-4) both lost at Shawnee Mission Northwest on Friday, while the Free State boys (2-2) and FSHS girls (3-1) split at Leavenworth.

Tonight’s action will begin with the girls game at 6 p.m. The boys will follow, with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
