It’s an annual downtown holiday festival with a lot of motion.

Red Dog’s Dog Days Jingle Jog will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday behind Kizer-Cummings Jewelers, 833 Mass.

“Nine out of 10 times, it’s super cold,” said Don “Red Dog” Gardner, who now organizes the annual event with his wife, Beverly Gardner. Laura Dahnert started the event seven years ago.

But about 100 people annually brave cold temperatures anyway, and plenty of joggers and walkers decorate themselves with Christmas lights and other festive attire.

It’s also for a good cause because Gardner and the organizers collect donations for the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence and Ballard Community Services.

The event typically raises about $1,000 for each charity. Gardner is also asking joggers to bring old pillows, sheets and towels to give to the Lawrence Humane Society for bedding.

Gardner said joggers will run south on Massachusetts Street to 11th Street before they turn and head north to Sixth and Massachusetts streets before returning to Kizer-Cummings. Walkers are welcome in the mile-and-a-half loop.

It has become a Lawrence tradition for families and staffers at downtown businesses to come and watch the joggers and walkers. Hot cider and cookies will be served at Kizer-Cummings after the jog before some participants visit The Eldridge, 701 Mass., to continue festivities.
