40 years ago: Mitchell named conference coach of the year

Jack Mitchell, the football coach at Wichita University, was named Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year. A native of Arkansas City, he eventually became an Oklahoma All-American quarterback after military service, then went from the Wichita coaching job to Arkansas U. He was hired as KU coach on Thanksgiving Day, 1957, with a five-year contract calling for $15,000 a year. In 1966, he left as the last KU coach to depart here with a winning record, 44-42-3.
