Man arrested on drug, weapons possession charges

A 20-year-old Lawrence man was arrested early Saturday on charges of drug possession, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, obstruction of legal procedure and having an out-of-county warrant.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl, police detained the man after an officer stopped a vehicle possibly connected with a Friday evening shoplifting incident at JC Penney, 3311 Iowa. The suspect was the passenger of the vehicle.

The suspect had a bag containing cocaine and marijuana packaged for sale, drug paraphernalia and a handgun. The man initially gave police false personal information. When his legitimate identity was discovered, the man was served with a warrant out of Johnson County. Lawrence Police did not have further details on the out-of-county warrant.

The driver of the vehicle was not arrested. The car stop was initiated at 2:08 a.m. in the 1400 block of Lawrence Avenue. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office booking log, the man was arrested at 2:50 a.m.
