Lillian Schonewise, jr., Lawrence High

A year after functioning mostly as a role player, Schonewise was a star this season, despite the fact that most opponents’ gameplans were designed to stop her. If she was at the net — on offense or defense — she typically put the ball down, finishing with 302 kills and 116 blocks. What’s more, she had just 21 blocking errors and also chipped in with 59 digs and 36 aces.

Kendyll Severa, jr., Lawrence High

During her first season with the varsity team, Severa was one of the most consistent players on the LHS squad. The junior libero led the team with 324 digs and finished the season with a pass rating of 2.34. Both numbers placed her in the top six in the Sunflower League.

Jasmyn Turner, sr., Lawrence High

Turner was a dual threat for the Lions during the 2009 season. She finished second on the team with 234 kills and second in digs with 311. She also added 44 blocks and 15 aces while playing one of the largest roles on an LHS team that enjoyed its second straight trip to the Class 6A state tournament.

Kiely Mosiman, jr., Lawrence High

During her first season as a full-time starter, Mosiman ran the show for the Lions, who qualified for the state tournament for the second straight season. She finished with 680 assists and added 154 digs and 48 aces to her stat sheet.

Chantay Caron, sr., Free State High

Known more for her basketball prowess (she’s attending Kansas State on a hoops scholarship next season), Caron had a monster senior season with the Free State volleyball team. She finished first in the Sunflower League in both kill efficiency (0.61) and blocks-per-game (2.4) and was named a first-team all-league performer and picked for the Mo-Kan All-Star Match.

Reilly Moore, jr., Free State High

Moore was on the court for one reason and one reason alone in 2009 — defense. And she delivered. Her 331 digs placed her fifth in the Sunflower League and she averaged more than four digs per game. In addition, the Firebirds’ libero had a pass rating of 2.14, which also placed her among the Sunflower League’s leaders.

Molly O’Hagan, jr., Tonganoxie High

The 6-foot junior was a monster at the net all season for the Chieftains. O’Hagan finished with 344 kills, 142 blocks and proved to be a valuable asset on defense, finishing with 220 digs and 34 aces. She was named to the all-tournament teams at the Rossville and Tonganoxie Invitationals and was named first-team all-Kaw Valley League.

Abby Eisman, sr., Tonganoxie High

Despite standing just 5-7, Eisman delivered in a major way for THS. She finished ’09 with 229 kills and 200 digs and added 33 blocks and 37 aces to her two most dominant categories. She was an all-tournament selection at the Rossville Invitational and was named first-team all-Kaw Valley League. She also earned a spot on the Mo-Kan All Star Match’s Kansas squad.

Kylie Shufflebarger, sr., McLouth High

In leading McLouth to just its second winning season in more than 20 seasons, Shufflebarger once again was sensational as a senior. The 5-10 middle hitter finished the season with 514 kills, an improvement on the 439 she had last season. She also added 165 digs, 53 solo blocks, 61 aces, and finished with a serving percentage of 91 percent. Shufflebarger also was the 2008 All-Area Volleyball Player of the Year.

Tami Crow, sr., De Soto High

Crow, the Wildcats’ senior setter, finished 2009 with 302 assists and a 98 percent setting efficiency. In addition to her steady numbers as the team’s quarterback, she also added 23 kills — an unusually high number for a setter — as well as 98 digs, 27 blocks and 21 aces.

Ramie Burkhart, jr., Baldwin High

Burkhart, a three-year varsity starter for the Bulldogs, finished the season as a dual-threat at the net. Her 177 kills place her near the top of the Frontier League and her 37 solo blocks and 94 assist blocks also put her near the top of the league. She also added 96 digs and 18 ace serves while functioning as one of the leaders for the Bulldogs.
