A timeline of Mark Mangino’s tenure at KU

Dec. 4, 2001 — KU athletic director Al Bohl announces Mangino’s hiring. The new coach had been an assistant at Oklahoma.

2002 — Mangino goes 2-10 in his first season after replacing Terry Allen.

2003 — Mangino leads Jayhawks to their first bowl berth since 1995. North Carolina State thumps KU, 56-26, in Tangerine Bowl to conclude 6-7 season.

2004 — Kansas finishes with a 4-7 record. After a 27-24 loss to Texas in Memorial Stadium, Mangino criticizes officials for an offensive pass interference penalty, saying “That’s right. BCS. That’s what made a difference in the call in front of their bench. Dollar signs.” Remarks earn Mangino a $5,000 fine from Big 12 Conference office.

2005 — Jayhawks compile 7-5 record, earn berth in the Fort Worth Bowl and knock off Houston, 42-13.

2006 — Kansas finishes 6-6 and is bowl eligible, but is snubbed for postseason berth.

2007 — Dream season. Kansas winds up 12-1 and earns BCS berth in Orange Bowl where Jayhawks spill Virginia Tech, 24-21. Mangino named Big 12 Coach of Year and AP National Coach of Year.

2008 — Mangino signs second contract extension in July, raising annual compensation to $2.3 million. Pact extends to 2012. KU goes 8-5, gains spot in Insight Bowl and wallops Minnesota, 42-21.

2009 — After starting season with five straight wins, Jayhawks drop last seven and Kansas Athletics Inc. confirms it is conducting internal investigation of Mangino for alleged player abuse.

Dec. 3, 2009 — Almost eight years to the day, Mangino resigns as KU’s head football coach.
