The Lawrence Habitat for Humanity will celebrate the start of construction on its 72nd home in Lawrence with a nail-driving ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday at the home’s location at 215 N. Comfort Lane. The public is invited to attend.

The three-bedroom home is being built for Trisha Powell and her two sons, Korbin, 9, and Kenzi, 3.

After the ceremony, volunteers will raise the exterior walls of the new home.

Powell said she’s eager to start on the house after spending two years working through the application process.

“I’m just ready to own my own home,” she said. “I’m excited to share all that with my friends and family.”

But the work is just starting for Powell, who also operates an in-home daycare. The program requires her to spend “sweat equity” hours as she joins with volunteers to build her new home. Powell then buys the home from Habitat through a no-interest loan.

Volunteers are still needed for Saturday’s event, and work on the house that day will continue until about 3 p.m. Interested volunteers can contact the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity at 832-0777 for more information.
