High school fans

To the editor:

My husband and I were very disappointed after returning from Hays this weekend and eagerly opening the Journal-World to read the high school football championship news. Unless we totally missed it, we did not find it in the Sports section or online.

We attended the Smith Center/Centralia game for Class 2A/1A. Smith Center entered the game with the longest 11-man winning streak in the nation at 79 games. Even though my husband graduated from Smith Center and has most of his family still living there, big congratulations go to Centralia, home of former Kansas University great John Riggins, for a well played game! They won 20-12 in overtime. On top of that, this was their first championship, ever.

Another reason I was surprised this game was not mentioned was because Joe Drape, The New York Times columnist, had stayed in Smith Center for almost a year to write a book, “Our Boys: A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen.” Your newspaper ran an article about it on Aug. 16. Joe came back from New York with his family to attend the game.

We also would have liked to have seen the other high school results since we knew families from several of the towns in the other class state championships and would like to know if that would be possible to include for upcoming state championship games. We are not from the Lawrence area, and feel there are others who would agree with our sentiments.
