Free State's Keene Niemack (14) returns a kick for a touchdown in the first half of the Free State and Olathe Northwest game Friday in Olathe.

Six Free State High football players earned eight first-team berths on the All-Sunflower League team as chosen by league coaches.

Seniors Camren Torneden and Michael Lisher were double selections — Torneden at quarterback and punt returner, and Lisher on the offensive and defensive lines.

Torneden and Lisher are repeaters at quarterback and offensive line, respectively.

Other Firebirds on the first team are senior running back Kirk Resseguie, senior offensive lineman Matt Ruder, senior kick returner Keene Niemack and junior linebacker Matt Cole.

Torneden (DB), Niemack (WR) and Ruder (DL) also earned second-team berths, as did Lawrence High senior running back Tyrae Jenkins.

In leading the Firebirds to an 8-3 record, the 5-foot-7 Torneden compiled 2,211 yards of total offense. He also returned three punts for touchdowns, including a school-record 71-yarder against Leavenworth.

The 6-3, 265-pound Lisher, son of Free State coach Bob Lisher, started at center and defensive end for three seasons. And the 6-3, 215-pound Ruder started every game at offensive tackle and defensive end.

Resseguie, a 6-2, 190-pounder, led the Firebirds in rushing with 1,099 yards and in touchdowns with 17. In addition to leading the Firebirds with 23 receptions, the 5-10, 165-pound Niemack returned two kickoffs for TDs.

The 5-8, 175-pound Cole was Free State’s leading tackler with 84 stops.

Jenkins, a 5-9, 165-pound tailback, was the primary offensive weapon for the 1-8 Lions, gaining 900 yards on 201 carries and scoring eight TDs.
