KU soccer claims tourney title

? Kansas University freshman Shelby Williamson scored early in the second half in the Jayhawks’ 1-0 soccer victory over Arizona State on Sunday at the Lady Vol Classic.

Goalkeeper Kat Liebetrau made five saves as the Jayhawks claimed the tourney title with a 3-0 record. Arizona State fell to 2-1.

Williamson crossed a ball from the far side of the net that deflected off an Arizona State defender into the goal for the game-winning score.

The Jayhawks shut out the Sun Devils two days after ASU scored three goals and fired 18 shots against No. 23 Tennessee.

KU outshot the Sun Devils 16-13 — 11-4 through the first 45 minutes. Senior Monica Dolinsky had five shots, including four on net. Junior Erin Ellefson and Rachel Morris each had three shots apiece.

Junior defender Lauren Jackson was named tourney MVP, while Jackson, Emily Cressy and Dolinsky were named to the all-tournament team. Jackson also was tapped the tourney’s most valuable defensive player. Cressy was named most valuable offensive player.

KU, which won its first regular-season tournament title since the UAB Classic in 2006, will play host to Long Beach State at 5 p.m., Friday, at Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
