Jersey City, N.J. ? Steve Marino gets another shot at his first PGA Tour victory after running off three straight birdies Saturday at Liberty National for a 3-under 68 to share the lead with Paul Goydos at The Barclays.

Marino lost in a playoff at Colonial and was tied for the 36-hole lead with Tom Watson at the British Open. He will be in the final pairing with Goydos, whose last win came at the Sony Open two years ago.

On a course soft from rain and playing 355 yards shorter with tees moved forward, Goydos also had a 68. They were at 9-under 204, two shots ahead of 24-year-old rookie Webb Simpson (72) and Fredrik Jacobson (68).

Still in the hunt was Tiger Woods, who made enough birdie putts and two good par saves for a 67 that put him within five shots of the lead in the first playoff event for the FedEx Cup.

GOLF

U.S. Amateur finalists set

Tulsa, Okla. — Byeong-Hun An will face fourth-seeded Ben Martin in his bid to become the youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur. After being 1 down heading to the 13th hole, the 17-year-old South Korean won four straight holes to close out a 3-and-2 victory against Fresno State sophomore Bhavik Patel on Saturday. Martin took a 4-up lead through six holes as Texas senior Charlie Holland got off to a sloppy start, and he cruised to a 5-and-4 victory.

McNulty, Roberts tied

Snoqualmie, Wash. — Mark McNulty shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday and shares the lead heading to today’s final round of the Boeing Classic. Loren Roberts had four birdies in his final six holes to match McNulty’s 65 and finish 11 under.

Nordqvist takes lead

North Plains, Ore. — Rookie Anna Nordqvist’s 3-under 69 on Saturday moved her into a 1-shot lead over Seon Hwa Lee and Ai Miyazato going into the final round of the Safeway Classic.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

USC WR breaks collarbone

Los Angeles — USC receiver Ronald Johnson will be out six to eight weeks after breaking his collarbone during the No. 4 Trojans’ mock game. Johnson was the Trojans’ third-leading receiver last season with 33 catches for 570 yards and eight touchdowns. The junior was expected to start for USC this season alongside Damian Williams.

Johnson was hurt Saturday during the second series of the mock game at the Coliseum when he was tackled after catching an underthrown 34-yard pass from freshman quarterback Matt Barkley.

Saban signs extension

Tuscaloosa, Ala. — Alabama coach Nick Saban has signed a three-year contract extension, athletic director Mal Moore said Saturday. Saban signed an eight-year contract when he joined the Crimson Tide in 2007. The extension takes him through 2017.

Players accuse Michigan

Detroit — Several Michigan football players claim the program regularly violates NCAA rules limiting how much time they can spend on training and practice sessions, according to a published report.

Players from the 2008 and 2009 teams told the Detroit Free Press for a story published on the newspaper’s Web site on Saturday that the amount of time they spend on football activities during the season and in the offseason greatly exceeds the limits. The players spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity because they feared repercussions from coaches.

Beasley stay not voluntary

Miami — A source familiar with the situation of Miami Heat player Michael Beasley confirmed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel that a misstep by the 20-year-old forward while participating in an outpatient program resulted in his current stay at a Houston inpatient rehab facility.

The source said the lapse was not related to drug use but rather adherence to program rules. The current stay is not voluntary, but is his only avenue for a return to play.

Under NBA policy, neither the league nor the Heat is allowed to comment on the substance-abuse program, including whether a player even is part of the program.

Briscoe beats Dixon

Joliet, Ill. — Points leader Ryan Briscoe went wheel-to-wheel with fellow championship contender Scott Dixon on the last lap and came out on top, winning Saturday night’s IndyCar series race at Chicagoland Speedway by only 0.0077 seconds.

Dixon finished second by a nose, followed by Mario Moraes and another championship contender, Dario Franchitti — keeping the series title fight tight going into the final two races of the season. Graham Rahal finished fifth.

Briscoe’s Penske Racing teammate, Helio Castroneves, appeared to break a suspension part and hit the wall with 16 laps to go.

Fisichella wins Belgian pole

Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium — Giancarlo Fisichella gave Force India its first Formula One pole during qualifying Saturday for the Belgian Grand Prix.

The 36-year-old Italian earned the Indian team its maiden pole with a lap of 1 minute, 46.308 seconds around the high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Entering its 30th race, Force India has yet to win a point by finishing among the top eight.

Toyota driver Jarno Trulli will start second ahead of BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld following a qualifying session that produced many surprises.

Ambrose gains pole

Montreal — Marcos Ambrose won the Nationwide Series pole Saturday at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the rain. Ambrose turned a fast lap of 80.905 mph to hold off Carl Edwards, whose best lap was 80.116 mph. Defending race winner Ron Fellows of Canada was third in 79.717 mph, followed by fellow road-race ace Boris Said.

Brad Coleman was fifth, followed by former Formula One standout Jacques Villeneuve, who made a gallant run on the track named after his father despite standing water on the 14-turn, 2.7-mile street course.

Series points leader Kyle Busch will start today’s race 12th.

Swiss rider wins stage

Assen, Netherlands — Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland has won the opening stage of the Spanish Vuelta, a 3-mile time trial on the Assen Moto GP circuit.

Wizards blanked, 1-0

Kansas City, Kan. — Pablo Campos scored in the 18th minute, backup goalkeeper Chris Seitz recorded his first career victory, and Real Salt Lake earned a rare road win with a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night.

Cubs’ Soriano to have MRI

Chicago — Alfonso Soriano is out of the Chicago Cubs’ lineup so the team decided to send the left fielder for an MRI on his sore left knee a couple days earlier than scheduled.

Wright says he’s ready

Chicago — David Wright is ready to get back on the field with the New York Mets, two weeks after he was hit in the helmet by a fastball from San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain. Wright, on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion, is expected to be activated Tuesday before the opener of a three-game series in Colorado.

Red Sox add Gathright

Baltimore — The Boston Red Sox have obtained minor-league outfielder Joey Gathright from the Baltimore Orioles for a player to be named or cash. The deal was completed Saturday. Gathright has 428 games of major league experience, including 20 this season with the Chicago Cubs.

Wozniacki takes title

New Haven, Conn. — Caroline Wozniacki has won her second consecutive Pilot Pen tennis championship, beating Elena Vesnina, 6-2, 6-4, in the final. It is the 19-year-old’s sixth tournament title, and third this year. Wozniacki of Denmark goes into next week’s U.S. Open having won every set she played in the New Haven tuneup.

New York — U.S. Open players and their entourages are being told to be careful about what they post on their Twitter accounts.

Signs are being posted in the players’ lounge, locker rooms and referee’s office at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with the header: “Important. Player Notice. Twitter Warning.”
