25 years ago: Major changes brewing for county commission

Formal agendas, videotaped meetings and a permanent meeting place were among the proposals being aired at county commission meetings. There had been controversy over commission policies and procedures and major changes seemed likely for operation of the commission.

More than 7,500 pupils were enrolled in kingergarten through the 12th grade in Lawrence’s public and private schools. Public school enrollment was listed at 7,248 after two full days of classes. The St. John’s Catholic school had 268 youngsters in kindergarten through sixth grade. The Douglas County Christian School had .an enrollment of 55.

The temperature here had reached 106 degrees on Aug. 28, burning away the former mark of 101 set 30 years before. New heat records were being set in virtually every city in Kansas with the 113 at Alton topping the charts. Hopes for bumper crops here were fading fast as the heat and drought continued.

The final KU fall enrollment of nearly 25,000 was taxing virtually every facility available.
