Forum seeks public input on proposed ordinance regarding gender identity

The public will have a chance to comment about whether the city should adopt a new law that would make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of gender identity.

The city’s Human Relations Commission will host a forum from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.

The city advisory board is seeking feedback on a proposed ordinance that would provide legal protection from discrimination for people who are transgendered, which can include transsexuals, cross-dressers and others who identify with a gender different from their birth gender.

The Human Relations Commission is in the process of preparing a report to the Lawrence City Commission, which will ultimately decide whether to adopt the new ordinance.
