Immediate needs

• AARP is looking for tax counselors for the elderly. Volunteers should have enough basic tax knowledge to prepare their own tax returns. Returns will be filed electronically. Basic computer skills are required. Contact Jack Connelly at connjac@aol.com or 865.3985.

• Small World, a program that helps international women and their children adjust to the Lawrence community, is looking for a hospitality chair. The volunteer would prepare a coffee and tea cart, greet new students, conduct building tours and assist with setting up food during assemblies and potlucks. For more information, go to smallworld.aec.ku .edu or call Kathy at 841-3645.

• The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and the city of Lawrence are looking for volunteers to manually count bicycles and pedestrians at several locations across the city next month. Shifts are 10 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 9, and from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 12. Volunteers will be required to attend a one hour training session, either from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 2 or 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 8. Information collected will used to strengthen grant applications to leverage additional funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects.
