From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 22, 1909: The fact that an agent from Kansas City has been in Lawrence to induce Haskell Indian girls to go to Kansas City and enter houses there was the startling statement made today by J.O. Milligan, the disciplinarian of the Indian school here. The matter came out in connection with the attempted runaway of four Haskell girls Wednesday night. The girls said they were going to Kansas City to take positions of employment and had no idea about the fate they were pursuing in trying to get away from Haskell. Milligan says he saw the man involved and believe he already has led three girls into lives of shame. Authorities are seeking him for arrest. . . . Delinquent taxes, some not paid by the city itself, are causing shortfalls in a number of categories and could lead to a rise in city taxes to make up the difference. County treasurer Eddy has a number of examples of those responsible for the problem and there is wonderment about how much money the city has been wasting. Among the city property on the delinquest list is the Carnegie Library along with New York School.
