Abel, Kindle Honored: Centerfielder Matthew Abel and catcher Bryan Kindle were named co-MVPs of the Lawrence Legion Raiders baseball team. Travis Sanders and Mitch Whitson earned the Al Ice and Louie Heinrich scholarship awards, respectively. The Raiders finished third in the AAA State Legion Tournament.

Flower Hole in One: Joanne Flower aced No. 8 at The Orchards on Aug. 14. She used a 9-iron on the 80-yard hole. Carol Randel and Rusty Moore were witnesses.

Gantz, Anderson Tie: Chris Anderson and William Gantz shot five-over 77s in rainy conditions Sunday at Alvamar for the low scores in the Jayhawk Golf Club weekly tournament. Drew Walters was third with an 87. In net scoring, William Patt was low with a 72, followed by Van Reichert 79 and Mike Farve 80.

Benefit 5k: Head for the Cure 5k, a race to benefit the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research Fund and Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative, will be Sept. 13 along the South Lawrence Trafficway bike path. For information, go to www.headforthecure.org.

Junior High girls hoops workouts: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State girls coach Bryan Duncan are joining forces to put on a fall workout for female basketball players currently enrolled in seventh, eighth and ninth grade. The clinic will be conducted one night a week, in two, four-week sessions, and will run from 7:30-8:45 p.m. each Wednesday beginning Sept. 9. The workouts will take place at FSHS.
