Three high-ranking EPA officials will tour the southeast Kansas town of Treece, the site of mining contamination, officials announced Thursday.

The decision to visit comes after U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., invited administration officials to see the damage and safety concerns in the town of about 100 people in Cherokee County.

Roberts, U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., and U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Topeka, whose district includes Treece, will accompany the EPA officials during the Aug. 20 visit.

The congressional representatives have been lobbying EPA to buy out property owners because of contaminated milling waste, caverns and hidden shafts that pose a danger to Treece residents.
