From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 13, 1909: At the Grand Army reunion in Salt Lake City, W.H. Lemon of Lawrence was elected national surgeon general of the Grand Army of the Republic. It is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on an old soldier. . . . About 500 attended the Christian Church picnic held yesterday on the university campus. . . . There are increasing complaints about the bad roads in the Lawrence area. There are many bad holes that need to be fixed. . . . The local doctors have challenged local lawyers to a volleyball game at the YMCA and many are due to turn out to see that to help break summer boredom. . . . There are efforts to make sure North Lawrence is not neglected by the new electric line system. No formal plans have been announced but word is there are plans to deal with the matter. Much depends on whether the bridge can handle such loads as electric cars create. . . . A record day’s business in real estate was done yesterday when 25 lots in the Babcock Place Addition were sold by the Hosford Investment Co. There never has been a local real state event like this.
