Chiefs add QB Gutierrez

River Falls, Wis. — The Kansas City Chiefs have claimed quarterback Matt Gutierrez off waivers from New England.

Gutierrez appeared in five games during two seasons with the Patriots, completing his only pass attempt for 15 yards. He signed the deal Thursday and joined the team for practice.

An undrafted free agent out of Idaho State in 2007, Gutierrez will compete with Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen as the backups to starter Matt Cassel. The Chiefs released Ingle Martin on Wednesday to make room for Gutierrez.

Pats trade for Burgess

Foxborough, Mass. — The New England Patriots obtained defensive end Derrick Burgess on Thursday after the two-time Pro Bowl player held out of the Oakland Raiders training camp in hopes of being traded.

The Patriots gave up undisclosed draft considerations for Burgess, who is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he had 3 1/2 sacks in 10 games. New England released offensive lineman Al Johnson.

Browns OG Hadnot hurt

Berea, Ohio — Cleveland Browns guard Rex Hadnot was carted off the practice field Thursday after suffering a possible serious injury to his left knee.

Hadnot, who started 15 games for the Browns last season, was hurt while pass blocking during team drills. The 6-foot-2, 320-pounder was engaged with defensive lineman Louis Leonard when rookie linebacker David Veikune got pushed into the outside of Hadnot’s left knee.

Hadnot crumpled to the grass in obvious pain as team medical personnel rushed to assist him.

The Browns had no immediate word on his condition.

OG Stapleton ailing

Latrobe, Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers right guard Darnell Stapleton will arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today, and the team has no timetable set for his return.

The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Stapleton had been practicing at center in place of Justin Hartwig, who arrived at training camp with a toe injury. But Stapleton had swelling in the knee and has not practiced since Sunday.

Hartwig, a Kansas University product, has been brought along slowly by the team with a toe injury he suffered in July.

Titans to honor McNair

The Tennessee Titans will honor slain former quarterback Steve McNair by wearing a No. 9 decal on their helmets this season, starting with this weekend’s Hall of Fame Game against the Buffalo Bills.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Thursday the league found it appropriate to approve the team’s 1 1/4-inch decal in memory of McNair, who was killed July 4. McNair played 11 seasons with the Titans and led the team to its only Super Bowl appearance.

Cards sign DE Field

Flagstaff, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals signed free-agent defensive end Alex Field to a one-year contract Thursday and put defensive end Jason Banks on injured reserve because of a knee injury.

Titan to be activated

Nashville, Tenn. — Tennessee’s first round draft pick Kenny Britt will be activated by today’s practice from the physically-unable-to-perform list but will not play in the Hall of Fame game Sunday night.

Britt hurt his right hamstring in May and aggravated the injury in June. That limited his exercise before training camp.

Bills RT Butler out

Pittsford, N.Y. — A bad back is expected to prevent Bills starting right tackle Brad Butler from playing in Buffalo’s preseason opener in the Hall of Fame game against Tennessee on Sunday.

Coach Dick Jauron, on Thursday night, called it “very, very unlikely” that Butler will play after missing the past three days of training camp since hurting his back on Monday. Without Butler, the debut of the Bills’ retooled offensive line will be on hold.

Earlier, the Bills signed defensive tackle Derrick Jones and waived defensive lineman David Lindquist.

Texans sign pair

Houston — The Houston Texans have signed free-agent cornerback Deltha O’Neal and free-agent running back Andre Hall, released rookie defensive tackle Jake Visser and waived injured rookie running back Jeremiah Johnson.

Falcons’ Douglas out

Flowery Branch, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons’ depth chart at wide receiver doesn’t look much like coach Mike Smith planned. Smith confirmed Thursday that Harry Douglas will miss the season due to a knee injury. Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White is in a contract holdout, and so the Falcons’ three-receiver formation includes Eric Weems, who has one career catch, and Brian Finneran, who hasn’t started a game since 2005.

Lions sign TE Butler

Allen Park, Mich. — The Detroit Lions have added depth for training camp at an injury-depleted position. Tight end Carson Butler signed Thursday, and kicker Swayze Waters was released.

Bengals ink TE Sherry

Georgetown, Ky. — The Cincinnati Bengals have added to their depleted tight end group, signing free agent Matt Sherry of Villanova. Sherry was a sixth-round pick last year and spent the season on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason. The Bengals waived him on June 20.

Saints sign lineman

New Orleans — The New Orleans Saints have signed rookie free-agent offensive lineman Joe McMahon and waived guard Shawn Flanagan. The club, in a statement Thursday, said McMahon, 6-4, 295 pounds, played one season at Central Michigan and started 12 games for the Chippewas in 2008.

Stallworth: I am sorry

Cleveland — Suspended Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth feels he has done “irreparable harm” to the family of the man he killed while driving drunk and said he is ready to accept whatever ruling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell makes on his future.

Stallworth, suspended indefinitely by the league for killing Mario Reyes while driving drunk in Miami, met with Goodell in New York on Wednesday about a possible reinstatement.
