The 14th annual Civil War on the Western Frontier will commemorate the role Kansas and Douglas County played leading up to and during the Civil War. Events will run from Saturday through Aug. 22 in Lawrence, Lecompton and the surrounding area. Here’s the schedule:

• A 27-minute docudrama that chronicles the first 10 years of Lawrence’s history and culminates with Quantrill’s Raid of the city. Free. Shown 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday; and 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St.

• Tour an 1860s-era home with displays relating to social and political legacy of newspaperman John Speer and the history of Lawrence. Free. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays-Mondays, 900 Del.

• Marla Matkin will give a first-person portrayal of one of the female survivors of Quantrill’s Raid. Free. 11 a.m. Saturday, Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

• Kids can learn why mud forts were built to protect early Lawrence and make their own. One adult registration required for each child. Preregistration and $20 fee required. 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Aug. 10-11, Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St.

• A Civil War living history re-enactment will be presented by the 4th Missouri Light Artillery and the 9th Texas. Free. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 15, South Park, 1145 Mass.

• Walk historical Massachusetts Street where on Aug. 21, 1863, Quantrill’s raiders destroyed much of the town and killed hundreds of men and boys. Reservations and admission charge required. 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Aug. 15, Watkins Museum, 1047 Mass.

• Tour historic Lecompton, the territorial capital. Free. 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Aug. 15-16, Territorial Capital Museum, 640 E. Woodson, Lecompton.

• Spend an afternoon with John Brown, presented by Kerry Altenbernd. Free. 3 p.m. Aug. 15, Watkins Museum, 1047 Mass.

• John Brown, portrayed by Altenbernd, gives a guided tour of the Black Jack Battlefield, where many consider the first Civil War battle to have been fought. Free. 3 p.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 16, Black Jack Battlefield & Nature Park, 163 E. 2000 Road, Wellsville.

• Tour parts of the 40-acre Black Jack park that includes ecosystems typical of eastern Kansas prairies and ruts from the Santa Fe Trail. Free. 4 p.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 16, Black Jack Battlefield & Nature Park, 163 E. 2000 Road, Wellsville.

• Herschel and Jacque Stroud talk about the Lincoln family background, their family tree and the fate of their descendants using the Lincoln Family Album. Free. 7 p.m. Aug. 17, Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

• First-person portrayal of Civil War surgeon Edwin J. Talcott, 8th Kansas Infantry. Includes a display and demonstration of medical equipment from the period. Free. 7 p.m. Aug. 19, Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

• Professor Farquar’s Great American Medicine Show is in the tradition of the 18th century snake-oil salesmen. Free. 7 p.m. Aug. 20, Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

• Lincoln and Me, a speech presented by Herschel Stroud, Kansas representative to the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, is a reflection on the Abraham Lincoln persona. Free. 7 p.m. Aug. 20, Watkins Museum, 1047 Mass.

• Visit the graves of the victims of Quantrill’s Raid with historian Katie Armitage, on the anniversary night of Quantrill’s Raid. Ages 14 and older. Preregistration and admission charge required. 8 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Aug. 21, Register at South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Mass.
