Free State baseball to host SM South at 6 p.m. tonight

Rain forces schools to move site of tonight's showdown between unbeaten Sunflower League squads

Chalk one up to the new turf.

The Free State High baseball team will play host to tonight’s 6 p.m. showdown between the only two Sunflower League schools remaining, when it welcomes Shawnee Mission South to town for a single game.

The contest, originally scheduled for tonight at SM South, had to be moved because of heavy rains.

Free State coach Mike Hill said the whole process of moving a game to Lawrence because of the turfed facility that is better-equipped to handle the rain was a learning process. Hill also said he had no idea how the rain would impact play or how the teams would be able to proceed if it were raining during the game.

“We’ve practiced out there after it’s rained and been fine,” Hill said. “So we’ll just have to see how it goes.”
