Former sheriff’s deputy receives posthumous honor at Leadership Lawrence graduation

A former law enforcement officer was honored Friday morning as members of the Leadership Lawrence Class of 2009 accepted their graduation plaques.

Lt. David Dillon of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was posthumously given the Don Volker Leadership Award for the years he spent striving to improve the community. His twin brother, Douglas Dillon, accepted the award on his behalf.

Members of 2009 class presented the award and described Dillon as a “quiet force that reinforced values.” His brother asked everyone to “remember his leadership, understanding of inmates and love of the sheriff’s department and the Lawrence community.”

Dillon died last June when his bicycle was struck by a car west of Eudora. He was not on duty at the time.
