Don’t stop the world. Lawrence High’s girls soccer team doesn’t want to get off.

The Lions spilled Olathe North, 1-0, in their home opener Tuesday night at Youth Sports Inc. fields to boost their record to 4-0. After winning three games in the McPherson Invitational, Lawrence has outscored its foes, 13-1.

Moreover, as senior Becky Davis pointed out about O-North, “It’s the first time we’ve ever beaten them.” It’s the first time in the five years Matt Anderson has been the Lions’ coach, that’s for sure.

“I’m not sure about before that,” Anderson said. “I would have to go back and look in the yearbooks.”

Yes, the Lions are hot, but for how long? Tuesday started a stretch of three games in four days that includes tonight’s visit to YSI by Shawnee Mission Northwest and a trip to Washburn Rural on Friday night.

“None are easy,” Anderson said. “They aren’t make-up games, either. We usually have one of these weeks that’s nasty.”

With so many games in so little time, Anderson had his fingers crossed that Tuesday’s contest wouldn’t go into overtime. Yet after 75-plus minutes, neither team had scored and OT seemed likely.

But with about 41?2 minutes remaining in regulation, the Lions’ Kristy Gerard fired a rocket from about 22 yards out that struck the upper left of the O-North goal post and ricocheted right in front of Davis who drilled the game-winner from about 18 feet.

“It was kind of lucky,” Davis said. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I just tried to keep it low.”

Added Anderson about the goal with 4:21 showing on the clock: “Becky made a great run and a great finish.”

Senior Emma Lumpe earned the shutout, thanks in large part to senior defender Olivia Dykes who headed an O-North shot out of the goal mouth in the first half, then deflected a medium-speed roller headed for the net that had eluded Lumpe with about 30 minutes remaining.

“Olivia was feeding off being MVP at McPherson,” Anderson said. “That first-half header was big, and the second-half play was very important as well.”

If there was a disquieting note about Tuesday’s win over a Sunflower League foe, it was that Olathe North is winless in five starts.
