Law enforcement report

• A Lawrence man was hospitalized Tuesday night after a stabbing outside an apartment complex in the 1700 block of West 24th Street, police said.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Mark Warren said Bernard Provancial, a 40-year-old resident of the complex, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries when he was stabbed with a long, narrow piece of wood during an altercation in the parking lot at 9:07 p.m. Tuesday.

“According to witnesses in the area, there was an exchange of words in the parking lot,” Warren said. “The suspect then attacked the victim.”

Provancial was stabbed with a piece of wood approximately 18 inches in length and an inch in diameter, Warren said. He was unable to give specifics about Provancial’s injuries.

“The ambulance didn’t seem to think he was in too bad of shape, but you never know,” Warren said.

A nursing supervisor at Lawrence Memorial Hospital said Provancial was receiving treatment for his injuries. She said nursing staff expected Provancial to be released from the hospital overnight.

A 32-year-old transient man was arrested in the incident. He was booked into jail at 9:46 p.m. on two counts of aggravated battery, one count of battery and one count of criminal damage to property.

• Lawrence police arrested a 24-year-old man for attempting to elude officers early Tuesday morning, police said.

Sgt. Ted Bordman said an officer recognized a Cadillac driving on Sixth Street and knew the driver had municipal warrants for his arrest.

When the officer tried to pull the car over at 1:36 a.m., the driver went through a red light at Sixth Street and Rockledge Road, Bordman said. The officer pursued the car to the 400 block of Missouri Street, where the driver pulled into his home driveway. He was then placed under arrest. The pursuit never reached high speeds, Bordman said.

The suspect was booked into Douglas County Jail on charges of attempt to elude and driving with a suspended, revoked or canceled driver’s license, but was released on $200 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Lawrence Municipal Court April 22.

Injury accident

A worker was injured Tuesday morning at the Kansas Turnpike construction site at the northern edge of Lawrence. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical units responded to the scene at 8:15 a.m., emergency dispatchers said, reaching the area through Riverfront Park.

A piece of metal fell on the victim’s leg but injuries appeared to be minor. The worker — an employee of United Contractors, the Iowa-based company that is building a new bridge over the Kansas River — was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, a dispatcher said.

Rex Fleming, the turnpike’s project engineer, said the injured man had been part of a crew working on the form of a new bridge pier on the east side of the river. A beam had been stuck on the form, he said, and came loose as contractors had been working to pry it loose.

The steel beam rolled onto the worker’s leg.
