Tuesday’s girls swimming meet at Lawrence High was such a mismatch that the LHS girls barely remembered how they finished.

It didn’t matter that the Lions took first and second in all 12 events or that they dismantled Ward-Piper, 147-33. All that mattered were the final times and how they compared to the state-qualifying standards. And why not? After all, this year’s team is off to one of the best starts in school history. Through two events, the Lions have racked up 12 state-qualifying times, the latest coming Tuesday when senior Erina Houk cracked the mark in the 500 freestyle with a 5:37.02.

“I’ve made state the last couple of years,” Houk said. “So this year it’s just all about how fast I can go. Today was really small, almost like intra-squad, and I think it was a lot more fun because it was so small. At bigger meets, we tend to get nervous. This was just a lot more relaxed.”

Highlighting the rest of the action was sophomore Emma Reaney’s school record in the 100 butterfly. Reaney’s 56.58 broke Chelsea Dirks-Ham’s 2007 mark of 58.59 by more than two seconds. The feat marked the third school record Reaney has claimed in her first two meets as a Lion. She also owns school records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

“Being that good, she’s gotta be a leader for us,” LHS coach Kent McDonald said. “And she is.”

Also winning events on Tuesday were: Claire Frost (50 free), Caitlin Haig (1-meter diving), Elle Weber (100 free and 100 breaststroke) and Sarah Schwartz (100 backstroke).
