Plea deal sought in hit-and-run case

A plea deal is in the works for a Lawrence man charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident.

Jake Deckert, 22, was back in Douglas County District Court, where his attorney on Tuesday asked the judge to set a plea hearing in the case.

Deckert faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident and failing to yield the right of way.

The charges stem from a May 4 crash at West Sixth Street and Gateway Drive, just west of Lawrence Avenue, that killed Thomas Crum, 60. Police located Deckert the next day.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson would not comment on the details of the proposed plea deal.

Judge Robert Fairchild set a hearing date for Tuesday.
