The King will rule at the Lawrence Community Theatre.

“All Shook Up,” a musical featuring more than 20 tunes originally sung by Elvis Presley, opens this weekend.

“It’s all Elvis songs,” says Mary Doveton, who is directing the show. “It’s part of that whole genre I think they’re calling ‘jukebox musicals.'”

The musical is set in a small town where the local officials have banned dancing. A young man, Chad (played by Zachary Phelps), comes through town to, according to Doveton, “kick-start a dancing, singing revolution that has everyone jumping out of their blue-suede shoes.”

Unlike some “jukebox musicals,” such as the well-known “Movin’ Out” featuring Billy Joel songs, this show has the entire cast singing Elvis songs. Tunes include “Love Me Tender” and “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.”

“There’s not one guy who goes up there and channels Elvis music all evening,” Doveton says. “The entire cast gets to sing the songs. It puts a fresher look at it.”

In addition to the show, the audience on weekend shows and Sunday matinees can be entertained by Elvis tribute artist Troy Hamon during intermission. Also, area residents were asked to contribute Elvis memorabilia, which will be on display at the theater, 1501 N.H. That includes a roll of “Moon Over Memphis” toilet paper.
