Free State volleyball defeats LHS

— Free State High opened its volleyball season with a 25-18, 25-16 victory against Lawrence High on Thursday night at Olathe North.

Free State went 3-0 and the Lions 1-2. Free State defeated SM North 25-12, 25-8 and Olathe North 25-13, 25-9. The Lions defeated Olathe North, 25-14, 25-14, and fell to Shawnee Mission North, 13-25, 25-17, 25-22.

Free State coach Nancy Hopkins cited the play of Chantay Caron and Taylor Manning. Among the leaders for LHS were Maddy Orth with 41 assists, Jasmyn Turner with 14 digs and 17 kills and Tayler Tolefree with 13 digs and 19 kills.

"We were very aggressive tonight," Hopkins said. "We're always happy to come out with three wins. It's always a tough match against Lawrence High."
