Heritage Month starts with soccer match

Kansas University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by kicking off with a trip to Kansas City, Mo., to see David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

KU’s Multicultural Resource Center is organizing an outing Saturday to Arrowhead Stadium to see the Kansas City Wizards take on the Galaxy, the first event of a monthlong celebration of Hispanic heritage.

This year’s theme is Nuestra Cultura Rica Contribuyendo al Futuro de America, or Our Rich Culture Contributing to America’s Future.

The events included in Hispanic Heritage Month range from speakers, Spanish language lessons and cultural events, lasting through Oct. 15.

A Latin cuisine potluck dinner takes place Tuesday; a Spanish language primer is scheduled for Wednesday; on Sept. 18, a mariachi band will help raise funds for the Centro Hispano Resource Center; Latin music and dancing is set for Sept. 24.

KU is hosting the fifth annual Feria Hispana on Sept. 28 at South Park, where families can learn about and enjoy Latin American culture.

The celebration closes Oct. 12 with world-renowned guitarists the Brasil Guitar Duo at the Lied Center.
