Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 8, 1908: “A disastrous fire at Baldwin yesterday destroyed the post office building, including the Baldwin Ledger office, Carter’s photography and Dr. Listen’s office, with damage running well over $20,000. The fire got too much a head start to be contained early. : Saturday, the Indians at Haskell finished putting up their hay crop of nearly 600 tons from their land near the Wakarusa River. : Owners of local dogs are being told to keep their animals at home as much as possible, even tied up because of a recent upsurge of hydrophobia among canines in the area.”
