Haskell, Baker on road

Baker University’s football team is hot. Haskell Indian Nations University’s program is not.

The surging Wildcats and the struggling Fightin’ Indians both will be on the road today – Baker at Central Methodist and Haskell at Southwestern Assemblies of God.

Kickoff for the BU game will be at 6 p.m. in Fayette, Mo. HINU and SAGU will collide at 2 p.m. in Waxahachie, Texas.

Baker has won four in a row, its longest win streak in seven years. The Wildcats (5-2 overall and 5-1 in the HAAC) have outscored their opponents 159-64 during the stretch.

Baker hasn’t won five consecutive games since opening 2000 with seven victories. A win over the Eagles would guarantee Baker back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1999 and 2000.

Central Methodist (2-5, 2-4) snapped a five-game skid Saturday with a 23-7 victory over Avila. Baker’s fourth win in a row was a 45-9 pounding of Evangel as HAAC rushing leader Richie Bryant ran for 200 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Haskell (2-5) will be hoping to end a three-game slide. The Indians are coming off a 43-14 loss to McPherson in their home finale.

Haskell has played SAGU every year since becoming an NAIA-affiliated four-year school in 1999. Haskell has won six of the previous nine meetings, including a 26-24 squeaker last year at Haskell Stadium.

Next week, Baker will play host to No. 9-ranked Missouri Valley. HINU will be idle next Saturday.
