Monday is it for the procrastinators in Kansas.

Voter registration closes at the end of the day for the Nov. 4 general election.

The Douglas County Clerk’s Office was already hopping Monday morning with dozens of people filling out registration forms to either change their addresses or register for the first time.

“It’s kind of what makes this country this country,” said Judith Owen, 19, a Kansas University sophomore from Paola. “We’re based on the whole premise of being able to elect who leads our country, and other people, in Afghanistan specifically, have died trying to get these rights. So I think as an American, it’s just – to be totally cliche – my patriotic duty to vote.”

Owen registered Monday morning.

Keith Campbell, the Douglas County elections deputy, said several mail-in registration forms flooded the office on Saturday. He measured the stack at 7 inches.

As of the end of Friday, Douglas County had 81,208 registered voters, but that number is on the rise. The county had 77,209 registered voters for the August primary and 65,181 at the time of the 2004 general election.

¢ To register, stop by the Douglas County Clerk’s Office in the courthouse, 1100 Mass., from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

¢ A registration application is available online. Completed applications can be faxed to (785) 832-5192, e-mailed as a PDF to kcampbell@douglas-county.com. Those will be accepted until midnight tonight.

Forms can also be mailed – postmarked Monday – to the clerk’s office, 1100 Mass., Lawrence, KS 66044.
