It’s a little bit of Westminster in Lawrence.

This weekend the Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club hosts its annual dog show, which includes more than 1,000 dogs and dozens of breeds that will be on display Friday through Sunday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds.

One of the largest shows in the region, the show forced a similar show in Chicago to reschedule, said Liz Devin, vice chairwoman of the Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club.

The show features conformation, obedience and rally competitions, with dogs in seven groups competing for Best in Show.

On Friday, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Dalmatians will be on display as part of an event hosted by the Heartland Dalmatian Club of Greater Kansas City.

Many more breeds will participate in the competitions from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Conformation events will be in the main arena, while obedience and rally competitions are in Building 21. Also on Saturday is the club’s annual Puppy Spectacular, which features young handlers leading puppies around the ring.

In addition to seeing top handlers and dogs, Devin said the dog show is a good way to learn more about breeds from people who raise dogs.

“You may think what you want is a golden retriever, but you might get to the show and see five or six other breeds you like,” she said. Professionals can give breeding and training advice as well, she said.

Devin warned that dogs that are not competing will not be allowed to accompany their owners. She said no baby strollers are allowed, and those attending should request permission before petting the show dogs.
