Get Down Town party to close New Hampshire Street

Motorists beginning on Friday morning will start to see the signs of a two-day downtown party.

The 800 block of New Hampshire Street will close at 6 a.m. Friday to allow organizers of the Get Down Town event to begin setting up a stage and other festival activities.

Parking in the two public lots on the east and west sides of the 800 block of New Hampshire also will be closed.

The Lawrence Farmers Market will continue in its normal location in the 800 block of New Hampshire on Saturday morning.

The Get Down Town event opens to the public at 4 p.m. Friday and will run until 11 p.m. It continues from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Both days will feature live music, food and beverage vendors, and a children’s area.

The street and parking areas will reopen by 6 a.m. Sunday.

There’s no admission to attend the event, which is being hosted by a new non-profit organization dedicated to bringing tourist related events to downtown Lawrence. The city also is sponsoring the festivities by providing $20,000 in funding.
