Man transported via helicopter after single-vehicle accident
November 22, 2008, 12:43 a.m. Updated November 23, 2008, 12:02 a.m.
A 41-year-old Lawrence man was transported by helicopter to Kansas University Hospital after a one-vehicle accident at Fifth and Colorado streets early Saturday morning.
At around 12:30 a.m., Mark Fraser was driving his truck west on Fifth Street when the vehicle veered into a ditch on the north side of the road, Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said.
When the truck hit the embankment, Fraser was tossed from the vehicle through the passenger door, which opened on impact. Fraser suffered severe injuries from the accident, Hadl said.
As of late Saturday night, the hospital could not release information on Fraser’s condition.
Hadl said witnesses reported no other vehicles or animals that may have contributed to the accident, which occurred near 1708 W. Fifth St.

How can your truck just all of the sudden veer off into a ditch with no provocation?

The lack of curbs and deep ditches around that neighborhood are rather dangerous. Not to mention some of the roads are narrow in places with not much in the way of street lights… Maybe the city could for go a round about or two and fix the roads in that part of town…

I know to most the possibility of a one vehicle accident seems unlikely. It can happen for a number of reasons. Improper tire size, falling asleep, inattentive driving to mention a few. I lost my brother last September because of a similar set of circumstances right about this time last year on K-10. My prayers are with this person's family.

I was talking about the wording of the article not the fact that a one vehicle accident couldn't happen.

domovik~ I agree that the wording seemed odd. How can they definitively say that no animals contributed to the accident? Is it not possible he swerved to avoid a deer?Shoot, I had one run in front of me in broad daylight, at 10:15 a.m., on Iowa between 15th & Yale, the other day. I didn't swerve—I just hit the brakes very hard—but I know that some people react that way.If there were witnesses to assert that there were no animals, it seems the article would've mentioned that; if no witnesses, it would be better not to even mention animals, as they are probably an unknown—and unknowable—factor. With ejection injuries, the driver will probably experience short-term memory loss, and not even know himself how it happened.I add my wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

I also have a feeling that the lack of a seatbelt was involved.Curtis, don't be sorry. Read flux's laundry list of troll posts.
