Missouri 86, Prairie View A&M 65

Columbia, Mo. – Leo Lyons scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half to lead Missouri to a victory over Prairie View A&M in its season opener.

“He was enforcing his will and our guys got the ball to him,” coach Mike Anderson said of Lyons. “Hopefully he can get some more minutes like that out of him.”

Missouri (1-0) led by as many as 24 in the second half despite shooting just 43 percent from the field – although the Tigers shot 44 percent from the three-point line.

Freshmen Miguel Paul and Marcus Denmon combined to shoot 5-of-9 from beyond the arc in their first regular-season college game.

“That’s the thing about our basketball team,” Anderson said. “There’s some balance there, but on any given night it can be guys like Miguel Paul and Marcus Denmon coming off the bench and giving us great minutes.”

Denmon was one of four Missouri players in double figures, scoring 15 points. DeMarre Carroll added 19 points and nine boards, leaving him a rebound short of his fifth career double-double since transferring from Vanderbilt before the 2006 season.

A frenetic Missouri defense forced the Panthers (0-2) into 25 turnovers, while holding Prairie View to 41 percent shooting.

Iowa State 67, Loyola-Marymount 55

Ames, Iowa – Craig Brackins, now Iowa State’s No. 1 option on offense, scored 21 points, and the Cyclones beat the Lions in the World Vision Classic.

Freshman Wes Eikmeier had 15 points, and Diante Garrett added 11 assists for the Cyclones (2-0), who played 10 guys for at least 10 minutes. The reserves came through with 32 points, led by Eikmeier’s 5-of-10 shooting from three-point range.

Iowa State wraps up its own round-robin tournament today against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Baylor 108, Paul Quinn 50

Waco, Texas – Henry Dugat scored 22 points, Quincy Acy finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds in his first college game, and Baylor defeated Paul Quinn.

Curtis Jerrells scored 17, and Kevin Rogers and LaceDarius Dunn had 16 apiece for the Bears (1-0).

Carl Nelson scored 17, and Ronald Ogoke added 10 points for Paul Quinn (2-3), an NAIA team from Dallas.

Baylor pulled away in the first half with a 32-6 run that began with a pair of free throws by Rogers.

Baylor set a school record with 13 blocked shots, five of them by Acy.
