Self doesn’t expect changes

Kansas University’s four returning scholarship players and walk-on Conner Teahan started last Tuesday’s exhibition basketball game against Washburn.

Whether Cole Aldrich, Sherron Collins, Brady Morningstar, Tyrel Reed and Teahan open tonight’s 7 p.m. clash against Emporia State remains to be seen.

“I’m better off not saying anything or something weird will happen tomorrow,” KU coach Bill Self said on Monday’s Hawk Talk radio show when asked about the lineup. “Maybe one (change). I don’t anticipate a lot of changes,” Self added.

Recruiting: Michael Snaer, a 6-foot-4 senior from Rancho Verde High in Moreno Valley, Calif., who on Sunday said he’d reveal his college choice on Wednesday, has had another change of plans. Snaer told Rivals.com on Monday his news conference might be pushed back a few days. He indicated he would choose between KU, Florida State and Marquette in the early signing period (Nov. 12-19). … Elijah Johnson, a 6-2 guard from Las Vegas Cheyenne High, who orally committed to KU on Oct. 18, is planning a signing ceremony next Monday at the high school. … Thomas Robinson, 6-8 from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., who committed to KU on Oct. 10, is expected to sign his letter Wednesday.

Robinson will play in Reno: Former KU point guard Russell Robinson has left his professional team in Turkey in order to play for the Reno (Nev.) Bighorns of the NBA Developmental League. Robinson was tapped in the second round of the NBADL draft on Friday.

“Russell wanted to return and play in the D-League,” Self said Monday. “He will be in Nevada playing and doing well real soon.”

Red-shirts: Self was asked by a Hawk Talk caller if he’d red-shirt any players this season.

“I don’t foresee it happening,” Self said, “although the rules state you now can play freshmen in exhibition games (and still red-shirt them). You can’t play juco guys or any returning guys. Right now we’re not thinking red-shirt at all. We’ll need our full complement of guys.”

Busy Hornets: Emporia State tonight will play its second game in two nights. Wichita State raced to a 15-0 lead en route to a 71-58 victory over the Hornets on Monday night at Koch Arena in Wichita.

Shang Ping, a 6-8, 230-pound senior transfer from the University of Nebraska, scored six points and grabbed three rebounds versus the Shockers.

Ping, who hails from Haerbin, China, averaged 3.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 9.9 minutes in 21 games for Nebraska last season.

“(The) big guy can’t play but five minutes a game right now,” ESU coach David Moe told the Emporia Gazette. “He doesn’t seem to be much of a factor until he learns to play without fouling. It’s very nice having a presence as big as Shang is. He’s certainly capable of being one of the better players in this league.”

The Hornets were picked eighth of 11 teams in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association poll. Matt Boswell, who averaged 3.7 points as a freshman, is ESU’s leading returning scorer. He scored 15 points versus WSU.

Emporia State coach Moe worked as a grad assistant for Larry Brown during KU’s 1988 national title season.
