Little doubt Kansas University’s women will face a different species of table fare in their second exhibition basketball game.

“It’ll be like apples and oranges,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said.

A week ago today, the Jayhawks disposed of Fort Hays State, 93-37, in their exhibition opener. Washburn won’t be that easy.

“They’ve given us fits every time,” Henrickson said of the Topeka school. “It will be night and day from what we saw last week.”

Tipoff will be at 2 p.m. today in Allen Fieldhouse. Sunflower Broadband 6 will carry a live telecast.

Both Fort Hays State and Washburn are NCAA Div. II schools. Both are members of the MIAA. The difference? Washburn, a perennial D-II power, has been tapped the preseason title favorite by league coaches. Fort Hays State, meanwhile, was picked to finish in the cellar.

The last time Washburn and Kansas met in an exhibition was two years ago. WU scooted to a 29-24 halftime lead, but the Jayhawks rallied in the second half to post a 68-62 victory.

Kansas won that game, incidentally, without scoring a single three-point goal, yet the Jayhawks’ ability to force 26 turnovers proved decisive, and will likely be a factor today.

“Our defensive pressure has to be better than it was last week,” Henrickson said, “and we have to rebound better. Fort Hays had way too many offensive rebounds.”
