Interview played in slaying trial

Jurors on Wednesday viewed the video of an interview that second-degree murder suspect Shanna Friday had with police when she denied knowing an elderly man was struck with a glass bottle.

During the interview, police detectives Lance Flachsbarth and John Hanson became frustrated with Friday because she admitted to being in the room when 62-year-old Jerry Deshazer was struck, but she said she saw only punches thrown.

Police found a broken glass bottle in Deshazer’s southeastern Lawrence mobile home. Deshazer bled to death from a head injury on Feb. 2.

Co-defendant Jerod Buffalohead, 36, has already pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and received a five-year sentence.

Friday, 37, faces a reckless second-degree murder charge, but her defense attorney, Hatem Chahine, has said evidence links Buffalohead to the fatal blow.

Prosecutors are scheduled to continue presenting witnesses today.
