From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 2, 1908: “Lightning struck the Merrifield home at 218 Maryland yesterday and caused very serious damage. The lady of the house was speechless for more than three hours due to the shock of the bolt. All the windows were broken and the neighborhood was thrown into a terrible fright. It was a miracle nobody was killed.”
