High school seedings determined

Free State High’s baseball team has earned the No. 1 seed and will play host to a four-team Class 6A regional on Thursday.

The top-seeded Firebirds (16-2) will meet No. 8 seed Leavenworth (3-14) at 4:30 p.m. The winner will meet either No. 4 seed Olathe Northwest or No. 5 Junction City at 7 p.m. Thursday for the right to go to the 6A state tournament at Topeka’s Hummer Park.

First, however, the Firebirds will entertain Shawnee Mission West at 5:30 p.m. Monday in a rainout makeup game. Free State already has clinched at least a tie for the Sunflower League title, but can win the league outright with a victory over the Vikings.

Meanwhile, Lawrence High’s baseball team was seeded No. 6 at the Washburn Rural regional and the Lions (9-10) will meet Manhattan at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Washburn University’s Falley Field.

Lawrence High’s softball team has also been assigned to the Washburn Rural regional and will also play on Wednesday. The Lions (4-16) are the No. 7 seed and will meet No. 2 Washburn Rural (18-2) at 4 p.m.

Free State’s softball team was sent to the Olathe Northwest regional as the No. 5 seed. The Firebirds (9-11) will play at 3 p.m. Monday against No. 4 seed Topeka High (9-11).

In girls soccer, the two city schools will meet each other.

Free State (5-11), the No. 5 seed in the 6A central regional, will tangle with the No. 4 Lions (7-9) at 6 p.m. Monday at Youth Sports Inc.
