Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 9, 1908: “David Bispham, considered the world’s greatest baritone, has arrived here with his pianist and two or three ladies for a song recital at Robinson Gymnasium. He is quite a personality and has made quite an impact in visiting around the community. : Up to now, the bodies of 12 murder victims have been found, dismembered, on a farm in La Porte, Ind. One observer remarked: ‘The horror grows steadily and this is a grisly scene, indeed.’ Police are seeking several suspects but no major arrests have been made. : The Central Protective Assn. of Douglas County plans to have all the area lodges take part in a special all-day program the coming fall at the county fair. It will be some kind of gymkhana. : Complaints are growing about the number of bicyclists dangerougly using sidewalks in North Lawrence and some arrests and penalties seem in order.”
