Man guilty in killing of Tonganoxie woman

A Kansas City, Kan., man was found guilty Tuesday in the beating death of the manager of a Bonner Springs Dollar General store.

After three hours of deliberation, a Wyandotte County court jury convicted Robert Haberlein, 20, of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery in the November 2005 death of Robin Bell.

Bell, 44, who lived in Tonganoxie at the time of her death, was found dead in the store she managed, killed by a blow to the head with a metal tripod.

Haberlein, who will be sentenced June 27 in Wyandotte County District Court, was the first of three defendants in the murder case to be tried.

John Backus, 21, Bonner Springs, will appear in court May 16 for a motions hearing. And no trial date has been set for Amber Russell, 18, Lenexa, who has a deal with the Wyandotte County district attorney’s office that she will be tried as a minor in exchange for truthful testimony in the trials of Haberlein and Backus. Russell was 15 at the time of Bell’s murder.
