Man pleads to charges related to standoff

A man who held police at bay for more than eight hours last month pleaded no contest Monday to child endangerment and domestic battery charges.

Joshua Smith, 26, was arrested by Lawrence police April 13 at a townhouse in the 3000 block of Bainbridge Circle. He will be sentenced June 2 by Douglas County District Judge Jack Murphy.

Under a plea agreement with the district attorney’s office, a charge of aggravated intimidation of a witness was dismissed.

Prosecutors said police were dispatched to the townhouse at 4 a.m. the day of the incident after receiving a 911 hang-up call. When they arrived they found a woman who said she had been beaten by Smith. Smith had three children – ages 3, 5 and 8 – in the residence with him. Smith eventually released the children and later surrendered without incident.

Smith remains in Douglas County Jail. Murphy declined a request by Smith’s attorney, Jim George, for Smith to be released on his own recognizance. The judge did reduce bond from $50,000 to $10,000.
