Dress for Success helps makeover

The fashion makeover series “How Do I Look?” (8 p.m., Style) gets behind a good cause. Host Finola Hughes welcomes a fashion-challenged woman with a difficult past to highlight the charity Dress for Success.

For many women trying to get out of poverty, homelessness and addiction, a job interview is the first step toward a new life. But many can’t afford the clothes that allow them to make a good first impression.

The nonprofit organization Dress for Success (www.dressforsuccess.org) solicits donations from working women who have clothes and outfits to spare. It’s a great way to do some spring cleaning and do a good turn at the same time.

¢ “American Experience” (8 p.m., PBS, check local listings) presents “Minik, the Lost Eskimo.” In 1897, Arctic explorer Robert Peary returned to New York with tales of new discoveries and with five Eskimos in his company. He’d brought them back to be studied by researchers at the American Museum of Natural History. Confronted with new diseases in a strange land, 7-year-old Minik was orphaned within months, leaving him without friends or family in the big city. This heartbreaking tale takes a personal look at a clash of cultures and explores the early, primitive days of anthropology.

¢ “Idol” grouch Simon Cowell takes his chances rounding the racetrack at top speeds in a modestly priced vehicle on the amusing and witty British car show “Top Gear” (8 p.m., BBC America). Every week, “Gear” invites stars big and small to take a crack at some high-octane fun. This is not Cowell’s first trip to the track.

NBC has announced plans to import and Americanize “Top Gear.” That should be a tall order. The car buffs on “Top Gear” take their role as critics seriously and blast vehicles that they consider substandard, ugly, slow or dangerous. That’s half the fun of watching the show. Will NBC allow hosts and experts to say things that could alienate potential advertisers? I think we know the answer to that question already.

¢ “Grindhouse” (8 p.m., Starz) presents a double feature of movies directed by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, complete with fake trailers and the look and feel of a dirty, scratched print. A celebration of cheap movies from the 1970s, “Grindhouse” left some (or at least me) wondering why two talented, if indulgent, filmmakers would spend upward of $50 million to make movies that look like they were made for $100,000.
