Nonprofits get grants

The Douglas County Community Foundation has awarded 35 local nonprofit organizations nearly $146,000 in grants.

The grants will benefit programs that serve children, families and low-income individuals with health or housing needs. Local arts and cultural projects also received funding. The foundation was created in 2000 to collect donations to support local causes.

The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence received an $8,500 grant for a summer Teen 2 Work Club for junior high aged youth.

The Lawrence Community Nursery School, which serves 60 families each year, was granted $2,050 to add high-efficiency insulation to its building. Affordable Residential Options also received some funding.

Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry, an all-volunteer organization, received $5,000 to buy food for families and individuals in need.

The Lawrence and Baldwin City Community Theatres received funds to purchase equipment.

Other grants went to the Eudora school district for a summer inventor’s camp, the Lawrence Public Library and to the Centro Hispano Resource Center.
