Deadly web

To the editor:

This will likely seem a bit “tree hugger-ish” to many, but I want to alert the community to a troubling environmental hazard. When I bought my wonderful house two years ago, I noticed a fine green netting kicking up here or there between clumps of grass throughout my yard. Obviously, someone had used the netting to protect the ground when laying down grass.

I didn’t think much about it until I saw robins picking up bits of broken netting and lining their nests with it. I thought MUCH harder about it when I saw a number of songbirds dead, dangling from trees tied up in this stuff. I spend free time now trying to pull up long strips of remaining net from my back yard.

It’s an endless job. Last week I realized with great dismay that many parts of campus are being seeded and covered with this awful net. I wonder how many birds will be killed and over how many years. This material simply doesn’t seem to break down.

Please, folks, don’t use this green ground netting in your yards and in other gardening projects.

Dawn Guernsey,
