One man is dead after a fishing outing on Lone Star Lake turned tragic.

A 67-year-old man from Illinois and a 46-year-old Eudora man were fishing in a small boat this afternoon, when the boat took water from high winds and waves, and began to sink at about 1 p.m.

“The boat went down quickly,” said Kari Wempe, the Douglas County Sheriff spokeswoman.

The two men yelled for help, but had trouble swimming to shore, because of the cold water, said Aaron Henrichs, a conservation officer for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

He said the lake’s water was 36.9 degrees. Winds were strong today, with gusts up to 40 mph. A wind advisory was in effect for Douglas County until 4 p.m. today.

Bystanders, including family members of the two men, assisted the men. Wempe said bystanders were able to get the Eudora man, who survived, out of the water. Another young man jumped into the water and assisted getting the Illinois man out of the water, she said. A bystander began CPR on him and continued until the first emergency responders arrived, Wempe said.

“Despite everyone’s efforts he was not able to be resucitated,” Wempe said.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical and Kansas Highway Patrol were on the scene.

The Eudora man was treated and released at the scene, Wempe said.

Neither the names of the two men, nor their relationship were released.

“I’m gratified to see that so many people were willing to take a risk and put themselves in there and come to the aid of someone,” Wempe said. “I’m very pleased and grateful on behalf of the sheriff’s office that they were able do to that for this family.”

Henrichs said the warm weather today, with a high near 70 degrees, brought more people outside and to the lake.

“It’s the first nice day of the year, and people want to get outside,” he said. “People are fishing for crappie all year. It’s to be expected people are fishing, but with water that cold” it can be dangerous.
