Day care center opens off K-10

A new day care center at the southeastern edge of Lawrence is looking to make a major entrance into the market.

Building Blocks Day Care Center opened this month at 1411 E. 1850 Road, inside the former home of Bishop Seabury Academy and, before that, Kaw Valley School, which opened there in 1957.

Bringing a longtime educational campus back into the mix for the youngest of potential students offered owner Victor Shenouda an opportunity considered too good to pass up.

“I’m not after profit as much as something useful for the society,” he said.

The center is licensed to handle up to 72 children ranging in age six months to 6 years.

In charge of the operation is Gina Petry, who has 20 years of experience in the business. She’s taught in preschool, operated an in-home day care and served as a literacy coach before signing on with Building Blocks.

Petry is looking forward to making the most of the campus’ five classrooms, large gymnasium, baseball field, outdoor playgrounds and room for gardens, walking trails and other features to help the place make a difference.
