Juvenile murder case reassigned

A 16-year-old Lawrence youth won’t know for at least another week if he will be tried as an adult on two-counts of felony murder.

During a brief hearing Monday for Kellam Jones, Douglas County District Judge Peggy Kittel reassigned the case to Judge Michael Malone. A hearing was scheduled for 2 p.m. July 2.

Kittel presides over most of the county’s juvenile cases while Malone handles adult cases. Malone will hear several motions and decide them, including the one from prosecutors who want Jones tried as an adult for the June 7 shooting deaths of Roland Klundt and Gage Hauk.

Prosecutors say Hauk, 18, McLouth, and Jones went to 1311 Del. intending to commit a robbery. During an exchange of gunshots, Klundt, 20, who lived in the house, and Hauk were killed. The law allows someone to be prosecuted for a murder that occurs during the commission of a felony.

Jones continues to be held in the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
